Doubled-island kitchens

One kitchen island seems pretty ideal, but two kitchen islands can really take your kitchen up a notch.

With a smart layout, a double-island kitchen can improve the traffic flow of a kitchen as well as its function.

Whether you cook a lot of large meals, entertain often or need extra space for work and dining, then doubled-island kitchen will give your space that functional appeal.

Plus, a double island kitchen will give you the aesthetic value that you’ve been looking for. It can drastically change the appearance of your kitchen.

More details

more detailed designs
Simplicity sure is nice and can make your home simple and clean.

However, it doesn’t mean that everything should be plain and solid.

Pay attention to areas where your home could use a little more detail. Whether it’s through crown molding or a unique light fixture, you want your home to stand out among the rest.

Plus, it’s fun to show off a little of your personality.

Patterns/Texture

patterns and texture
Simple colors and patterns is playing it safe.

If you want your rooms to pop, it’s all about eye-popping patterns and textures to make your space anything but boring. You can paint your walls with patterns or use shiny, eye-catching wallpaper to dress up a room.

The same goes for your furniture: it doesn’t have to be plain and simple. Best of all, it doesn’t even have to match.

As a decorator, you can take more risks when it comes to colors and patterns. You might be surprised by how far the options are

Dramatic Color

dramatic colors
While neutral walls and furniture can help to sell your home, it’s okay to get a little more creative.

Don’t be afraid to paint your walls in more bold colors.

Sure, it’s a difficult decision to make, but it’s one that inexpensive and can make a huge difference to your space.

This is especially true for the kitchen. What was once a space with a monochromatic scheme is now a place for vibrant and attention-grabbing hues. This could mean anything from blue cabinets to a yellow backsplash.

Ceilings that call your attention

large kitchen ceilings that attract attention
Over time, you have to have your ceilings painted that same shade of white to keep them looking fresh and clean.

However, who really pays attention to the ceiling unless there’s something to look at. This year, it’s time to change that.

Consider installing a light fixture that’s modern and gives good light to an area. Ceilings are most often overlooked when painted a plain white, try painting it a color to match your room.

If you’re feeling adventurous, wood-paneled ceilings or beamed ceilings could give your ceiling the character you were looking for (at a higher cost).

designs to ditch, or trends that are old and not used anymore

Taxidermy

It certainly makes a statement, but not the kind of design statement you want to make for 2016.

This is especially true if you’re trying to decorate to sell your home. Any piece in your home that makes a statement should be removed to avoid influencing the buyers in any way.

Even if you aren’t planning on making a move, it’s a good design decision to remove all taxidermy pieces. Not everyone is a fan.

Brass hardware

brass hardware
Your cabinets, doorknobs, hinges, bathroom sinks, fixtures, etc. covered with brass hardware need to go.

These fixtures not only look dated, but can show rust and will scream that your home interior needs an update. Replace your brass fixtures with brushed or satin nickel hardware for a modernized look.

Desks in kitchens

desks in the kitchen
What was once a solid use to conduct business in the kitchen has now become a place to store books, bills and anything else that doesn’t have a perfect home in the kitchen.

Be honest with yourself, how many times have you productively used this space?

Over the years, technology has greatly changed the way that we organize and store all of our information. Consider using your kitchen desk space as a place as a mini coffee bar, a charging station or placing a decorative chair with the desk to at least dress it up. There are many possibilities.

Still, you should keep the desk to the office. All that your kitchen desk will do is take up needed space in your kitchen that could be used for better purposes.

Microwaves on the counter

microwaves on the counter
They’ve gone from the kitchen counter to up above in the kitchen cabinets.

Now, the latest kitchens don’t have a built-in microwave.

They either have a shelf that comfortably fits their microwave or newer homes have a microwave built into the drawer. This makes your typical microwave one that sleek and stylish for the design of your kitchen. It also saves precious counter space.

Mirrored furniture

mirrored furniture
Sure, it made your room appear more spacious, but now it makes the atmosphere feel a bit too retro.

Mirrors on your closet doors, tables, and every wall space is a little intimidating. Not to mention, it can make you look like you have a huge ego.

If you want your interior to look dated, then by all means keep the mirrored furniture. Otherwise, leave the mirrors to the bedrooms and bathrooms.

Whirlpool tubs

Whirlpool tubs
These once popular tubs can rack up your water bill as they can use up to 100 gallons of water. Not to mention, they’re pretty expensive in itself.

Throw in that they require regular maintenance and take up precious bathroom space and this could be a home feature you’ll want to ditch.

So what do you do instead?

Consider replacing a whirlpool tub with a large walk-out shower or his and her sinks to better accommodate you and your other.

Refuse to live without the luxury of a whirlpool? Replace it with a regular tub.

You’ll save money, space and can still enjoy the bliss of soaking in the tub after a long day’s work.
